Look Akela - no hands!

We ran our pack meeting and no-one was allowed to use their hands! Do you know how difficult this is?

We scattered the playing field with paper balls and the cubs, in relay formation, had to collect as many paper balls as possible, deposit them in their respective buckets - of course, without using their hands!

It is not as easy as it seems....

Well done - keep going ...

.... and the winner was the Yellow Six (Girls Six) who collected the most.

Our next game was fun, fun, fun!

Plain doughnuts were strung up across the hall....

..... and the cubs were lined up in relay formation again and each cub had to come forward - hands behind their backs - and eat a doughnut until it was off the string.

They then ran back to their Six and the next cub came forward.

Of course, they loved this game and wanted to do it again. Needless to say we did not have any more doughnuts!

Our next game was "pass the orange" which, I am sure you will agree with me, is not the easiest thing to do!

A few hands got in the way!

..... some managed to get it right.....

..... and did it pretty well .....

...... and some had a few mishaps!.....

The instruction for the Leaping Wolves was easy yet the cubs were quite reluctant to get going! They had to write an article.

...... nothing difficult ......

And then we had the opportunity to invest 2 new chums.

I thought I would just add these as well. The Leaping Wolves have to do a Display of the knots they have learnt throughout their cubbing career.

Where are the Clowns? 25th July 2008

One of our "New Chums" was invested today.....

...... and it is always special to have one of the parents put their cap on their head.

Our theme during this pack meeting was "Clowning Around".
Our Steam Release game was great fun whereby cubs were paired off and had to stand back to back in relay formation. On the whistle, they had to run to a pre-determined mark and back.

Our 2nd quick game entailed the cubs running around and on the whistle they had to stop dead still but pull a "clown face"

The cubs loved this!

Our craft for the day was making these gorgeous balancing clowns.

The cubs first of all coloured in the pictures of the clowns. Stuck them to thick cardboard and placed coins at the bottom where the clown's hands are.

As you can see, they balance perfectly!

Knights in Shining Armour!

Hello there - it is so good to be back after so many weeks holiday!

This week our theme was "Knights in Shining Armour"

Our Steam Release game was a quick "stick in the mud" game whereby the Knights had to ride around on their horses being chased by commoners.

We then went straight in making shields and swords.

The shields are very simple to make - cardboard cut 30cm x 30cm and shaped into a shield. We spray-painted these silver and black on the front.

As you can see handles were made out of cardboard and pasted onto the back of the shield.

Dragon pictures were printed and the cubs could choose which dragon they wanted on their shield. This they cut out and pasted onto the shield.

The swords were made with bamboo cut to about 60cm long. We also took a coke bottle and cut off the top section and then "threaded" the bambdoo through the lid of the bottle. This gave a handle effect.

It doesn't always go according to plan!

Then we changed it a bit which added a touch of excitement. Each team had to stand at their side of the rope. On the "go" signal they had to swap sides, pick up the rope and pull. This was great fun!

We then went into Instruction and "my" Leaping Wolves were doing the Knotting Board.

..... and the Cheetahs planted some flowers!

As I drove home at 18h15, I noticed that the moon was full - looking spectacular. This is a photo taken over my side wall, and over the neighbours house - but you can still see the stunning sight!

Today we also started reading our book "My Side of the Mountain" - on which I will base our Pack Camp in October.

Holidays are almost over and we start Cubbing again next week Friday - 18th July - yipee!

Our Leaping Wolves have to do a knotting display as part of their advancement and this week this is what we will be doing. It is a simple display yet very effective.

Take a polystyrene meat tray (very cheap) and tie and position the 10 knots onto it and label.

The only change I would make it to use coloured string as it will be more visible.

If you have any ideas, let me know and I will gladly publish them on the blog.
