Kontiki - Pirates of the Caribbean - 2009

Kontiki 2009!

.... and this year's theme was Pirates of the Caribbean.

Our Beaver Challenge Activity had the cubs looking for treasure with a metal detector!

We had a guest visitor at Kontiki this year. Flat Sachiko from Baltimore in the USA spent the day with us and now we need to write a message in her blog and send her back home!

We do hope that she enjoyed her stay with us and had great fun doing all the activities at Kontiki.

BP - his early days - 6th March 2009

We normally do a programme on BP close to the 22nd February but because of our District Camp, we had to postpone it for a couple of weeks.

BP was not a great scholar and enjoyed the outdoors. The cubs ran around and hid away from the leaders and had to try and sneak back into the hall without being seen!

Even though BP was not good at his school work, our cubs enjoy learning!

and the highlight of the meeting was Pig Sticking - a favourite of BP's

Even the Leaders enjoyed it!

BP was also a great marksman.

We placed coloured paper plates onto the fence and the cubs, in relay fomation, hit the plates with tennis balls. They counted how many successful hits they had.

Baloo gave them a quick talk on BP and how clever he was during the war!
All in all a superb programme.

Easter Egg Hunt - Sat 28th Feb 2009

A fun Easter Egg Hunt was set up in Arrowe Park on Saturday to attract more cubs into the scouting movement.

Each Pack participating was asked to set up an activity to keep the children occupied.

9th Benoni set up a simple game of skittles but with a difference.
2 litre cold drink bottles were painted and 1 had some 'bunny' ears attached. The rest of the bottles were numbered.

The aim of the game was to hit the bottle with the bunny ears to win a sweet.
The cubs enjoyed this!

Other activities were making a 'wrrrr - wrrrr' !
We used to make these as children with huge buttons - but they work just as well with paper.

A piece of string is thread through the middle and wound up. As you pull on the string, it gives way and makes a 'wrrr' noise.

This was the game base.

Here they were being different farm animals.

And they also had cubs going out on the gig and learning how to row!

The Wizz of the Weaver - 27th Feb 2009

We are THRILLED to have a new leader join us!

Raksha was invested on Friday - welcome to 9th Benoni - we know you will love being with us!

Weavers are busy little birds with the male always building nests to his mate's specifications! So he is always on the lookout for nesting materials.
Here the cubs had pieces of wool stuck in belt loops and on the word 'go' ran around picking up whatever nesting material (wool from others) they could find. At the end the 'bird' with the most nesting material was the winner.

We brought up into our groups and here the Cheetahs are learning knotting.

While our Lions learnt time.

Raksha is using a fun way of teaching the 24 hour clock.

Our Revision Game was the simple reef knot.

In relay formation cubs ran up tied a reed knot with the piece of rope they had and after a specified time, the Six with the longest rope was the winner.

We did the Recycling Interest Badge and each cub had to bring 3 recycled items from home. Here one of the cubs have a bird feeder made from a cold drink box, a bullet shell that is being used to hold paint-brushed and a railway sleeper made into a key holder.

As part of the Recycling Badge, each cub had to make an item from material that would normally be thrown away. They had to make something useful.

Each cub made their own skipping rope from 500ml cold drink bottles.

They also had to learn about a company that did recycling. Here Raksha is telling them about Mondi Paper Recyclers.

The facinating thing is that she is describing how paper is made 'in pictures' by starting with the chopping of the trees and ending with what all paper can be used for.

We said goodbye to 3 of our cubs today and had the 'going up' ceremony.

Here one of them is being invested into Scouts straight after they openened.
