Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief - 22 October 2010

We continue with our Movie theme and today we learnt all about "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief"

Percy Jackson did not know that he was the son of Poseidon...

Steam Release Game: Poseidon, Hades, Zeus, Minotaur, Centaur .... cubs must find cards and match name to the description.

He had a best friend Grover who was also his protector - he could skip well with his goat legs...

Relay Game: Cubs in Sixes, skip to a pre-determined line and back.

His teacher, Mr Brunner gave him a pen telling him that it is a powerful weapon BUT a fury wants to get it away from percy so let's pass it around and keep it safe!

Circle Game: Ball toss

Start with all the players in a circle with one person holding the ball. The starter throws the ball to the person directly across from them. That cub then throws the ball to the person to the left of the starter. Play continues in the same way, with each person throwing the ball to the person to the left of the person they got the ball from, untill all players have touched the ball. To add further fun, bring in another ball that is just passed around clockwise.

Percy decides to travel in a dangerous quest to retrieve the lightning bolt and save his mother but he must convince and gather his friends to help him.
Game: Buddy Tag

To begin choose 1 person to be "it" and one person to be the "runner".

Everyone else finds a buddy and scatter around the playing field. On go, "it" must try to catch the "runner" but the "runner" can link arms with a pair of buddies before he gets tagged. When the runner finds a buddy, the buddy on the other side of the pair then becomes the "runner". If the runner cannot link to a buddy and gets tagged, he becomes "it".

Percy had to hone his skills and learn to fight.

We all did our instruction here.

Oh dear, they have been attached by Hades who wantes the lightning bolft for himself. We must get it back.

Game: Catch that lightning bolt

Each cub puts a sock or twig into his/her back pocket or pants. The object of the game is to grab other player's lightning bolt without losing your own. Any player who loses a sock must sit down, but if another player passes close enough the sockless player can grab himself a new sock and re-enter the game.

With the day saved, Percy returns to school and a normal life until the next adventure!

... and before we knew it, it was time to close....

Here is Wade receiving his Caracal Badge.

and Aiden receiving his Cheetah Badge

and Caid has done his Gardening Badge.

Well done to everyone!

Some time with SHREK - 15th October

We continue with our "movie" theme - this week being SHREK.

Shrek - is a huge ogre who the villagers did not like.
STEAM RELEASE GAME: Red Light, Green Ligh
Villagers must sneak up on Shrek but as he turns the villagers must freeze. If Shrek sees anyone moving, they are 'eaten' and join Shrek.

"you moved"

Shrek has agreed to save the Princess but first he has to get through all those tunnels.

RELAY GAME: Dig out of the Tunnel
In Sixes, cubs stand with legs apart. Cub at the back must crawl foreward through the legs of the other cubs to the front. Once standing the next cub goes and so it carries on, until the six reaches a certain point.

Shrek knows he is not the sharpest tool in the shed and knows that it is important to learn.

Caracals learn "flag behaviour"
Cheetahs planted seeds
while Leopards did invites.
The Lions did sense-training.
Shrek has some weird ears and donkey was really special - who would you like to be?

HANDCRAFT: Mask making
Cubs colour in masks to wear

Oh dear - look at this - Shrek and Donkey have come across a huge dragon guarding the fortress - we must mind our way otherwise we are going to get all tangled up.

GAME: Get the Chain Unravelled
Cubs divided into 4 teams in straight lines. From the front they put their left arms through their legs. The cub behind then holds with the right hand. On the whistle the last cub must lie on his back still holding hands and the whole group moves backwards over this cub. Once the whole team is lying down they must do it in reverse, until they are all standing up. Once standing up they receive a sweet each.

Just look how fast Donkey can move - I wonder if he will ever guess what we are doing ...

Each Six is given a slip of paper with ideas to enact.
1. happy donkey with hiccups
2. Sad donkey who does not believe in himself
3. Mischievious donkey
4. Donkey who likes to play tricks on others
5. Happy, dancing donkey
6. Donkey with an attitude.
Can you guess?
Sad donkey who does not believe in himself.

????
Happy, dancing donkey
Another lovey day in the land of make-believe.

A visit with Mary Poppins - 8th October

It was our AGM and Prize-Giving tonight but first we had an enjoyable afternoon with Mary Poppins!

Our award recipients..
Vegetable horses...Mr Carrot Legs, Mr Potato Man and Miss Marrow... all looking smart and geared up for the race at Arrowe Park..

But first.... Michael and Jane were out to look for a new nanny - one who was cheerful and happy who would take care of them. They knew they could not get rid of any more horrid nannies so they had to find just the right one!
GAME: Finding a cheerful nanny
Pictures of nannies are hidden all over the playing field but only 1 is Mary Poppins. Everone finds 1 nanny and they ask Akela if theirs is the perfect nanny!

... and of course when the wind changed, in flew the cheerful nanny - none other than Mary Poppins herself. She was such a fun nanny to have around and she would take Michael and Jane to the fairground and let them eat lots of candy but best of all she took them to the races!
TEAM GAME: Horsing Around
Cubs in Teams and on the throw of the dice each team moves forward however many score on the dice.
The cubs had huge fun with this game...

All running even...

Mary Poppins was very strict - so Michael and Jane also had to do some learning...
The Caracals learnt all about how to wash their hands properly - next week being National Hand Washing Week.

Mary even taught them some fun songs to sing - as she was always happy and singing.
SINGING: Supercalifragilistixexpialidocious
Mary Poppins even brough along her magic bag - the very same one that had all those wonderful magic items inside - do you remember?
SENSE TRAINING GAME: Cubs were divided into 3 and each team formed a circle. Each circle was handed a bag filled with special "Mary Poppins" items. Cubs had to close their eyes and feel, passing the bag around the circle. Once everyone had felt the items, Akela gave each team a chance to name 1 item - if they got it right they got a point - until all items had been named.
From one bit of fun to the next..

It was time for 'tea on the ceiling'

so the cubs enjoyed their gingerbear in the trees in Arrowe Park.

It was then on to our AGM and prize giving.
