Gilwell Reunion & 3-bead presentation - 4th September 2010

Gilwell Reunion was held at Gilwell in Florida yesterday - the theme being "Hobo"

I am very proud now to be a 3-beader!
... and here I am receiving my beads from the National Commissioner - Training.
As is the norm, a tree was planted and we held a moving Scouts Own.

.... afterwhich it was time to get into our "hobo attire" and enjoy the evening amongst friends.

Our very own brew of "blou trein"

The meal was a stew which is placed in a half a loaf of bread. Part of the bread is "dug out" and replaced with the stew.
This is a common meal amongst the hobos - called "bunny chow"

The evening ended off with a campfire.

A day in the life of ..... DR WHO - 3rd September 2010

Two paramedics joined us today to show the cubs all about the do's and don'ts of First Aid.

Our steam release game was a quick run around where 10 cubs are chosen as the ambulances and the rest of the cubs are cars on a busy highway. Both line up opposite each other and the ambulance drivers need to get past and through the cars....

It became quite dangerous after a while and so we changed the game to 'stick in the mud'.

.. so how do you make a stretcher if you are in the bush ...

We try to let the cubs use their own imagination and see what they come up with ...
Here they are using their belts..

here scarves are being used..

.. and here a combination of both ..

but most of them seemed to work..

but we did have one accident!!

Taryn and Phil went through all the requirements and here they are showing the cubs the "recovery position"

The cubs loved the practical side of it...

"leg up, stop laughing - you are supposed to be unconscious!"

Even Rikki had a go!

Oh dear - 1 broken arm..

There are many uses for our scarf!

so all in all we learnt
* how to treat burns
* how to take out a sting
* the recovery position
* how to open an airway
* how to splint an arm
* triangular bandage
and hopefully the cubs are a little wiser.
it was then time to see who had collected the most "funny money". This was for our competition among the Sixers. With this money we will be buying mosquito nets for the children of Africa. These cost $10 each and we are hoping to be able to buy around 10 nets.
If anyone would like to look at what we at 9th Benoni Cub Scouts are doing - go to "Bite Back" for more details.
The air was charged with excitement as the cubs were busily counting their hard-saved cash... and in the end it was BLUE SIX who won!
So off to movies they will go on Saturday 18th September.
Well Done to you all and thanks to everyone for generously donating.

All too soon the meeting was over.
Well done to Quentin for achieving his Silver Recruiter Badge.
Till next time

National Cub Challenge - 28th August

We had the special priviledge today of meeting some wonderful friends from Windmill Park Multipurpose Centre. Two Leaders and 12 children joined us as we had 'fun in the sun' with the National Cub Challenge.

9th Benoni Cub Scouts with the children of Windwill Park.

We opened and introduced ourselves.

... and then it was time to look for the sunniest and happiest cub ....

Prizes were handed out to lots of cubs and friends as everyone looked happy!

Our first game had the cubs running around and stopping in their tracks as soon as the music stopped.

Handcraft was next ... and whilst out in the South African sun, it is important to wear a hat. Here the cubs and friends made their own.

The two leaders from Windmillpark Multipurpose Centre - Maria and Thendeka.
Maria fosters 19 children in her home.

We then divided the cubs and friends into 2 equal teams and had them push a ball around an obstacle course.

The team who had all it's team members complete the course first and sit down was declared the winner.

It was a close call......

The yarn was a beautiful story about how winter came to the world.

Raksha read the story to the eager cubs and friends.

Our circle game was hilarious!
Some of the cubs and friends first of all did not know left from right and did not want to give up their hats in the fear that they would lose them!
What should have happened was the child takes his right hand and collects the hat from the person on his right. He places the hat on his head..... and so it continues.
Is that your right hand?

What did Raksha say?

Up next we showed them how to make a pin-wheel. The wind was blowing gently so these were ideal.

Items that would be taken to the beach were placed under an unbrella. Cubs had to race up and take a look and memorise these.
Once everyone had had a turn, they had to recall all items.
It was then PARTY TIME and each cub and friend had a huge plate of cup cakes, sweets, toys and cold drink.
Plenty of ball games were played and this guy loved the soccer.

Games of skittles were available.

The girls loved the skipping.

We also had baseball.

and all too soon it was time to close off.

Each week the cubs collect "funny money". This money is saved up and goes towards a worthy, good cause. With this money the cubs bought the Windmill Park Multipurpose Centre som canned food and pasta.
One of the cub's moms also sponsored a stationery kit for each child.

Akela thanking them for joining us today.

Happy smile!

Thank you to everyone who joined us today. Thank you to the 9th Benoni leaders and parent helpers who made today so special.
