East Rand District Cub Fun Day - 27 November 2010

Fun in the Sun!
By 09h30 all the cubs were revved up and could not wait any longer for us to start!

Our first fun event was cork bobbing.
Cubs aged 7 and 8 had to collect as many corks as possible for their pack.

This is just tooooo much fun!

Counting our kitty!

It was then the turn for the cubs aged 9 and 10 - in the bigger pool.

9th Benoni did very well in this event!
It was then on to the "noodle" race.
Cubs could use the noodle anyway they liked to get across to the other side.

Aren't these just so cute?
A really novel way of getting kids to wear some sort of life-jacket.

Spoon race was next up ....

.... and the best of all .....
the tube race

the cubs could not get enough of the tubes - they spent hours playing with them!

Some of the cubs even completed their "Swimming" and "Aquanaut" badge - well done!

... and by then it was almost time to P A R T Y ....

... they had a quick game of water polo ....

and then some serious eating took place!

It was really a great day and the cubs had tremendous fun.
Till next Time

Ratatouille - 26th November 2010

Cubs love cooking over the fire!
Need I say any more?

A rat named Remy dreams of becoming a great French Chef despite the obvious problem of being a rat in a rodent-phobic profession!
STEAM RELEASE GAME: Kill that Rat!
Cubs are given a balloon which has an elastic band tied around the top. This is tied to the cub's ankle. On 'go' cubs must "kill those rats" by stamping on the other's balloons.

Remy throws in some ingredients and 'whala' the soup is a success and Linguini's career as a chef is born.

Part of the Instruction for the Caracal was "lighting a match" and "fire safety"

Remy risks death to enter a human kitchen where he discovers five-star chef, Anton Gusteau, author of "Anyone can Cook"

RELAY GAME: Dicing Death
In relay formation cubs run up to the "human kitchen" (empty coke bottle) where they have to dodge all the kitchen items falling to the floor (dropping toothpicks into the coke bottle)

The caracals also did some mapping learning how to recognise objects from the top, bottom, side, front or back.

Each cub is given a random card with a picture on it which is either shown from the front, back, side etc and they need to place it in the correct bundle.

The Cheetahs made some lovely hot soup as well as apples dunked in hot chocolate.

The Lions made this interesting Box Oven.

Cover the inside of a fairly big box with tinfoil.
Decide how many coals will be required - 1 coal for about 10 deg C - so approximately 18 coals should do the trick. Place these into a baking tray.
Place tin foil over a flat tray and on it place your item to be cooked. The cubs were cooking lovely cookies.
Place lid on top and let cook for approximately 10 to 15 minutes or until cooked!
Akela Sharon's Peculiar Peanut Parcel
half a cup of peanut butter
half a cup of sugar
1 egg
Mix all together
Spoon onto baking sheet
Bake at 180 deg C for 10 minutes.
(This was tested in a conventional oven - and it works!)
The Carcals also wanted to cook something of their own so we braai-ed some marshmallows.

The Leopards also made some enormous 'twisters'

which really looked good!

Remy's passion for cooking set into motion an exciting rat race that turned the culinary world of Paris upside down!

Cubs having fun!

1st Benoni Cubs were out on their raft on the dam today..
